The Bravest Bull at the Pool
Leo was seven years old and terrified of the swimming pool. Every summer, his friends splashed and laughed while he sat on the edge, dangling his feet in the cool blue water. He wished he could be brave.
"Come on, Leo!" called his best friend Maya. "The water's perfect!"
Leo shook his head. "I can't. What if I sink?"
Maya's eyes twinkled. "I have something magical." She reached into her bag and pulled out a bright green inflatable. "Meet Zombie Zebra!"
"What?"
"My dad calls it a zombie because it keeps coming back no matter how many times it pops!" Maya giggled. "Watch this." She tossed the wobbly zebra into the pool. It bobbed up instantly, grinning with its painted smile.
Leo couldn't help but smile. The zombie zebra looked ridiculous, not scary at all.
"Here's the secret," Maya whispered. "You pretend Zombie Zebra is a magical friend. He'll never let you sink because he's made of special bravery magic."
Leo took a deep breath. He slid into the shallow end, gripping the zombie zebra's neck. To his surprise, he didn't sink. The water held him gently, like a soft blanket.
"Kick like a bull!" Maya cheered. "You're the Bravest Bull at the pool!"
Leo kicked his legs. Splash, splash, splash. He was swimming! The zombie zebra bobbed alongside him, its goofy grin encouraging him onward. The water felt wonderful, not scary anymore.
For hours, Leo practiced. He blew bubbles like a fish. He floated on his back like a star. He even let go of Zombie Zebra for whole seconds at a time.
"My dad was right," Maya said when they finally took a break, eating juicy watermelon slices. "Being brave doesn't mean you aren't scared. Being brave means you do it anyway, even when you're scared."
Leo looked at the sparkling pool, then at his silly green zombie zebra. "I think I'm ready to swim without Zombie Zebra tomorrow."
Maya grinned. "You're already the Bravest Bull. You proved that today."
That night, Leo dreamed of underwater adventures with Zombie Zebra and the Bravest Bull, swimming through rainbow-colored coral reefs and discovering hidden treasures. When he woke up, he couldn't wait to get back to the pool.
The real magic wasn't in the inflatable toy or pretending to be a bull. The real magic was inside Leo all along — courage that grows stronger every time you try something new.
