The Boy Who Walked on Water

Marcus stood at the edge of the community pool, chlorine stinging his nose. His palms were sweating so much he thought they'd slip right off his lifeguard chair. Below him, the swimming tryouts were chaos—splashy, chaotic, beautiful chaos. And he? He was the chicken.

"Yo Marcus!" yelled Ty from the water, dripping wet and grinning. "Your turn, bro! We need a relay team!" Everyone laughed. They all knew Marcus couldn't swim.

Suddenly, Maya appeared beside him. She was the sphinx of sophomore year—mysterious, unreadable, always watching everyone like she knew their secrets before they did. Her dark hair was pulled back, and she held out a gummy vitamin. "Your mom said you forgot these."

Marcus groaned. "She's obsessed. thinks these'll make me grow six inches."

"She's not wrong," Maya said, popping one herself. "You're slouching again."

They stood in comfortable silence as the next race began. Water churned, bodies lunged forward. The sphinx spoke again: "What's the one thing everyone wants but can't buy?"

"Uh, happiness? Love? TikTok followers?"

"Confidence," she said simply. "You're scared of looking stupid. But you know what? No one's watching as close as you think."

Marcus stared at the shimmering blue surface. Below, palm trees waved in the breeze, casting long shadows across the deck. His heart hammered. He was so tired of being the scared one, the one who stayed dry while everyone else dove in.

"I'm gonna do it," he said, voice shaking.

Maya smiled—a real one, not her usual sphinx-like half-smile. "Finally."

He jumped.

The water swallowed him cool and sudden. He thrashed, splashed, definitely didn't look cool. But he didn't drown. He doggy-paddled to the side, gasping, while everyone cheered.

"That was TERRIBLE," Ty called, laughing. "But you did it!"

Maya tossed him a towel. "First time swimming since you were five?"

"Since ever," Marcus admitted, grinning so hard his face hurt. "But I'm gonna learn."

The sphinx nodded approvingly. "Good. Because next week's the real meet, and we need that relay team." She paused. "Also, take your vitamins. You're still slouching."
