The Boy Who Tamed Clouds
Leo was running through the meadow, his bare feet dancing on morning-dewy grass. His favorite toy bull, Ferdinand, poked from his pocket—worn golden horn, chipped hooves, but perfect.
"Today's the day," Leo whispered, pressing Ferdinand to his heart. "Today we'll catch a cloud."
His best friend Mia laughed, her braids flying. "Clouds are just mist, Leo!"
"Not the cloud-bulls," Leo insisted. "My grandpa saw them—great white bulls that graze across the sky, leaving hoofprints of rain."
They reached Willow Creek, where swimming meant splashing in water the color of liquid sunshine. Mia dove in first, surfacing like a sleek otter. "Come find the cloud-bulls!" she called.
Leo waded in, Ferdinand clutched tight. Suddenly, something bumped his leg—a zombie firefly! Its glow flickered weakly, on-off-on-off, like a tiny heartbeat.
"He needs magic," Mia said, cradling the firefly in her wet hands. "Grandpa says zombie fireflies are just tired dreams. They need wonder to wake up."
Leo knew what to do. He closed his eyes and imagined the most wonderful thing: a world where every toy came alive, where fireflies never stopped glowing, where friendship could fix anything.
*POOF!*
The firefly blazed brilliant gold, swirling upward. Higher and higher it flew, trailing sparkles like stardust. The sparkles danced together, forming something white and fluffy and magnificent.
A cloud-bull! Its horns were made of silver lightning. Its eyes held rainbows. It lowered its magnificent head, and Leo and Mia scrambled onto its back.
Together they soared through clouds that tasted like cotton candy and laughter. Below, the meadow became a patchwork quilt of emerald green and sapphire blue.
"We did it!" Leo cheered, holding Ferdinand tight. "We made magic!"
The cloud-bull nuzzled Leo's cheek, leaving a damp kiss of summer rain.
That night, Leo and Mia sat by Willow Creek, watching zombie fireflies blink sleepily. Leo's pocket felt lighter—Ferdinand was gone.
In his place sat a single perfect cloud, shaped exactly like a bull, with golden horn and chipped hooves and all.
"Magic," Mia whispered.
Leo nodded. Friendship, he'd learned, was the strongest magic of all.
