The Boy Who Swam the Sky

runningswimmingspinachfriend

Leo hated spinach. Every time his grandmother placed those green leaves on his plate, he made a face.

"It'll make you strong," Grandma said with a wink.

One afternoon, Leo was running through Grandma's garden, playing hide-and-seek with his dog, Sunny. He tripped over something green and leafy.

A spinach plant was glowing!

Curious, Leo pulled one leaf. It sparkled like a tiny star. Before he could think, he ate it.

WHOOOSH!

Leo felt lighter than air. His feet lifted off the ground. He was floating! Then running—except he wasn't on the grass anymore. He was running ON CLOUDS!

"Sunny!" he called. But Sunny couldn't follow him up here.

Suddenly, something green swam past him. A spinach leaf? No—it was a girl made entirely of green leaves, swimming through the sky as if it were water.

"Hello!" she said, flipping in the air. "I'm Spinella. You must have found my garden."

"I'm Leo," he breathed, watching her swim through clouds. "Can you teach me?"

Spinella giggled. "You're already doing it! You're running on clouds. Now try swimming through the sky."

Leo tried. At first he flopped like a fish out of water. But Spinella held his hand.

"Feel the wind," she said. "Let it carry you, like water carries a leaf."

Leo relaxed. Suddenly, he was swimming too! They soared over mountains, raced eagles, and slid down rainbows.

"This is amazing!" Leo laughed. "But why me?"

"Because you needed magic," Spinella said kindly. "And I needed a friend. I've been alone in these clouds for a very long time."

Leo's heart squeezed. He remembered how lonely he felt before Sunny came into his life.

"You'll always have a friend now," Leo promised. "Me and Sunny."

Spinella smiled, and leaves rained down like confetti. "Then you'll need this."

She pressed a glowing spinach leaf into his palm. "Whenever you miss me, just eat one leaf from Grandma's garden. I'll come find you."

Leo opened his eyes. He was back in the garden, Sunny licking his face. The glowing leaf was still in his hand.

That night, Leo ate all his spinach.

"What changed?" Grandma asked, surprised.

Leo just smiled. "It makes me strong. And it keeps my friend close."

Sometimes, magic hides in the places we least expect—even in our dinner.
