The Boy Who Could Talk to Animals

Leo was the smallest boy in his village, but he had the biggest secret. His messy brown hair could sense when magic was near.

One afternoon, while hiding behind a palm tree near the river, Leo heard someone crying. It wasn't a person. It was a tiny goldfish trapped in a shallow puddle!

"Please help me," said the goldfish, and Leo nearly fell over. Animals could talk to him!

Leo scooped up the goldfish in his hands. "I'll take you to the river. But my friend Ferdinand the bull is guarding the bridge. He's very grumpy today."

Ferdinand was indeed grumpy. The enormous black bull stood in the middle of the wooden bridge, his nostrils flaring like storm clouds.

"None shall pass!" Ferdinand bellowed. "Unless you can answer my riddle."

Leo's heart pounded, but the goldfish whispered in his ear, "I know the answer! Ferdinand loves riddles about nature."

The bull asked, "What makes you strong but starts small?"

Leo thought hard. Then he remembered his mother's words at breakfast. "Spinach! It makes you strong but grows from tiny seeds."

Ferdinand's eyes widened. "Correct! You may pass."

Leo released the goldfish into the deep, flowing river. She swam in a happy circle, then popped her head up.

"Thank you, Leo! For your kindness, I grant you a gift. From now on, you'll understand all animals. You'll never be lonely again."

And Leo never was. He and Ferdinand became best friends, and together they helped all the creatures in the valley.

Leo learned that even the smallest person can do big things when they're brave and kind. Sometimes the most wonderful adventures start with helping someone in need.

The goldfish still visits sometimes, and to this day, Leo's hair tingles whenever magic is nearby.
