The Boy Who Caught Lightning

Leo sat on his porch, watching the storm clouds roll in like gray wool blankets. His grandma always warned him about staying inside during storms, but Leo loved the sky's light show.

A bolt of lightning flashed—CRACK!—like nature's camera snapping the biggest photo ever.

Then something magical happened. A tiny spark, no bigger than a firefly, drifted down from the clouds. It spiraled and danced, glowing soft yellow like a lemon drop. Leo cupped his hands together, and the spark landed right in his palm.

It didn't hurt. Instead, it tickled, like a butterfly made of sunshine.

"Hello there," Leo whispered. The spark blinked happily.

The little lightning spark wiggled up Leo's arm and settled in his curly brown hair, where it made itself at home like a tiny glowing nest. Leo gasped. His hair now shimmered with streaks of gold, silver, and blue—the colors of the storm itself.

Grandma came outside. "Leo! What in the world...?"

"I caught a spark, Grandma! Now my hair is magic!" Leo spun around, and the spark trailed behind him like a miniature comet.

But the spark looked sad. It pointed upward, toward the dark clouds where its family flashed.

"Oh," Leo said softly. "You miss your home."

The spark nodded with a little blink.

Leo stood tall, lifted his palm toward the sky, and whispered, "Go home now. I'll visit you in every storm."

The spark shot upward—WHOOSH!—joining the lightning bolts dancing in the clouds. They seemed to wave goodbye, flashing extra bright just for Leo.

Leo's hair returned to normal brown, but sometimes, when storms came, he could feel a gentle tickle, like an old friend saying hello.

Some gifts are meant to be held, Leo learned. And some gifts are meant to be set free.
