The Blue Hair Incident
Maya's hands trembled as she held the box of electric blue hair dye. Her bathroom mirror reflected a girl ready to change everything.
"You're actually doing it?" Lena's voice came through the phone speaker. "Your mom will literally kill you."
"That's kinda the point," Maya muttered, shaking the bottle. "Need to reclaim my life before sophomore year destroys my soul."
The transformation took forty minutes. When Maya finally rinsed out the dye, her previously boring brown hair now screamed in electric blue. It was chaos. It was courage. It was totally going to get her grounded.
At school Monday, everyone stared. The popular girls whispered. Her history teacher did a double-take. But Lena—her best friend since seventh grade—barely looked up from her phone at lunch.
"So," Maya said, pushing food around her tray. "Thoughts?"
Lena shrugged. "It's… bold. Different, you know?" She kept checking messages, barely making eye contact.
That night, Maya cried in her room. The blue hair wasn't supposed to fix everything, but she thought at least her friend would hype her up, not act like Maya had betrayed their shared aesthetic of safe and invisible.
Three days later, Maya found Lena sitting behind the school, crying.
"What's wrong?" Maya forgot her own hurt immediately.
Lena held up her phone. "My cat, Mittens. She's been missing since Sunday. I've been searching everywhere but—" Her voice cracked.
Sunday. The day Maya dyed her hair blue. The day Lena had been too distracted to care.
"I'm so sorry," Maya said. "Let's look together."
They searched for hours, calling Mittens' name until dusk. Behind the old gym, they heard a faint meow. Lena's cat was stuck in a tree, terrified.
Maya climbed up without thinking, her blue hair wild in the wind. When she finally reached Mittens and safely handed the cat down, Lena was grinning through tears.
"Okay," Lena said, scratching Mittens behind the ears. "The hair? It actually slays. Especially when you're rescuing cats like a total badass."
Maya laughed, some tightness in her chest finally loosening. They walked home in the golden light, a girl with blue hair and her friend and a rescued cat, already planning their next adventure. Some things change. Some things stay. And sometimes, that's exactly what you need.
