The Blue Hair Incident
Zara sat on the edge of her bathtub, staring at the emergency blue hair dye she'd impulse-bought at 2 AM. The first day of sophomore year was in four hours, and her natural curls were currently a shade of blue that could best be described as "radioactive skittle."
"You're literally trending," Maya texted, along with a screenshot of Zara's accidental TikTok Live from the bathroom floor. Three hundred views.
Zara groaned and tossed her iPhone onto the counter. Being the designated "spy" for their friend group had seemed fun last year—snapping pics of what Connor wore to lunch, documenting who sat with whom at the pep rally—but she'd never imagined being on the other side of the lens.
At school, the hallway went quiet as she walked in.
"Love the hair!" called Chloe, the same girl who'd "accidentally" posted Zara's braces photo in eighth grade.
Zara's palms sweat. She pulled out her iPhone, instinctively ready to document, to spy, to observe—anything but be observed. But then she caught her reflection in someone's locker window: the blue wasn't terrible. It was just... a lot.
"You look like a totally different person," said Liam, her crush since seventh grade, actually looking at her for the first time ever. "It's bold."
Bold.
Zara thought about all the times she'd spent hiding behind her screen, watching everyone else's lives instead of living her own. Being the spy meant staying safe. Being seen meant risking it all.
She pocketed her phone. "Yeah," she said, lifting her chin. "I guess it is."
By lunch, the blue hair had become its own legend. Someone started a hashtag. Maya posted a pic with the caption #BlueHairEnergy. Zara ate her sandwich feeling strangely light, like she'd been carrying a backpack full of rocks for years and finally set it down.
That night, she scrolled through her camera roll—hundreds of photos of other people, other moments, other lives. She hovered over the delete button, then stopped. Instead, she opened the front camera and took one photo: just her, blue curls everywhere, grinning like an idiot.
The caption wrote itself: #NoLongerASpyJustMe
