The Betrayal Game
Elena adjusted the brim of her hat, pulling it low over her eyes. The padel court gleamed under harsh fluorescent lights, a cage of green and blue where middle-aged executives pretended they were still twenty.
"You're wearing a hat inside?" Sarah laughed, bouncing the ball. Her blonde hair was still perfect at forty-five, expensive highlights catching light like spun gold. Some friends just didn't age.
"Sun sensitivity," Elena lied, adjusting her wig beneath the hat's concealing shadow. Three months undercover, infiltrating Sarah's department at Meridian Corp, collecting evidence of embezzlement that would destroy the career of a woman she'd known since college.
They'd played padel every Thursday for years. Before Elena had become a corporate spy, before ethics had demanded she choose between friendship and justice. Sarah had been her maid of honor. Had held her hand during her miscarriage. Had helped her through the divorce.
"You seem different lately," Sarah said, serving. The ball hit the wall with a sharp crack. "More distant. Is everything okay?"
Elena's racket slipped. The ball sailed past her.
"Fine. Just tired."
Sarah moved to retrieve the ball, then paused. "My hairdresser mentioned something odd. Said he saw someone who looked exactly like you at a competitor's headquarters. Wearing a wig, but the bone structure..."
The silence stretched between them like a razor wire.
"He was mistaken," Elena said, though her heart hammered against her ribs.
"Was he?" Sarah's voice dropped, losing its warmth. "Because I found this in your bag last week when you were in the shower." She reached into her pocket, produced a tiny flash drive. "My entire financial database. My entire life."
Elena's stomach hollowed out. "Sarah, Iā"
"How long?" Sarah's eyes glistened, her perfect hair catching light like a halo around devastation. "How long were you my friend while secretly working to destroy me?"
"Three months. The SEC made me an offer I couldn't refuse."
"And you chose strangers over me."
"I chose the truth."
"No," Sarah said, walking toward the exit. "You chose to spy on the only person who ever loved you unconditionally. The game is over, Elena. We're done here."
