The Best Friend Breakup

Marcus sat on his bedroom floor, surrounded by empty Gatorade bottles and what his mom called "a disaster zone." But he couldn't clean it up. Not yet.

On the TV—connected by that fraying **cable** his dad kept promising to fix—**baseball** highlights played on a loop. He and Jamal used to watch these together, analyzing every pitch like they'd be in the majors someday. That was before Jamal discovered the gym and self-optimization podcasts.

"Bro, you're still drinking that stuff?" Jamal had texted him earlier, along with a photo of his new **vitamin** regimen. Twelve supplements, perfectly arranged. "That's basically poison."

Marcus stared at his phone. Jamal was his **friend** since third grade. They'd shared everything—secrets, lunches, that time Marcus cried when he struck out in the championship game. Now Jamal was different. Leaner. More confident. Always talking about "maximizing potential" and "leveling up."

Marcus felt like a **zombie** these days anyway—staying up till 2 AM scrolling through highlights, his brain half-empty from junior year stress. Jamal seemed… alive. Radiant. Annoyingly so.

His phone buzzed. Jamal: "Wanna hit the cages? My treat."

Marcus hesitated. Then grabbed his glove.

At the batting cages, something shifted. Jamal wasn't perfect. He kept swinging at bad pitches, frustrated with every miss. Marcus wasn't great either, but he laughed at his strikeouts.

"You know," Jamal said, sitting against the fence afterward, sweat dripping, "I think I'm overthinking everything."

"Yeah?" Marcus handed him a Gatorade.

"Yeah. All those vitamins, all that optimizing…" Jamal shook his head. "I forgot how to just… be."

They sat in silence, watching the sun dip behind the abandoned field. Some things change. Some things don't.

"Same time next week?" Marcus asked.

"Bet."

Maybe they'd both figure it out eventually. The growing up part, I mean. Together.
