The Bear Witness

The summer before junior year, I learned that sometimes your most embarrassing moments become your best stories.

I was at Tyler's lake house—the kind of party where everyone pretended to be cooler than they actually felt. My crush, Sky, was there, looking unfairly good in cutoffs and an oversized band tee. I'd been working up the nerve to talk to them all night, psyching myself out like I always did.

Then Tyler's ancient **bull** dog, Duke, decided to make his entrance. The massive creature burst through the screen door, knocking over a speaker and sending everyone scrambling. Someone's phone went flying into the lake. Pure chaos.

Sky ended up beside me on the dock, laughing as Duke ran in circles, chasing his own tail. "Your first party?" they asked, reading me way too easily.

"Is it that obvious?" I felt my face burn.

"Nah, you're just vibrating with anxiety," they said, grin widening. "Wanna get out of here?"

We ended up at the old **cable** tower behind the property—the kind of rusted structure parents tell you not to climb but everyone does anyway. The view was actually insane, all twinkling lights across the lake.

That's when it happened. My first kiss, tasting like cherry lip balm and nervous energy. I was floating, dizzy, thinking this was it—the moment everything changed.

Until Duke found us.

The **dog** came bounding up the trail, barking like he'd discovered a murder scene. But he wasn't alone. Somehow he'd attracted the attention of the massive **bear** that lived in the woods nearby. The thing was massive, silhouetted against the moon, and it was heading our way.

We didn't even think—we just ran, sliding down the hill, Sky's hand squeezing mine, screaming like little kids. The bear lost interest halfway down, thank god, probably more scared of the noise than anything.

Back at the party, nobody knew what had happened. But Sky and I sat on the dock, knees touching, hearts still racing, and laughed until our sides hurt. "Well," they said, "at least we'll always remember our first kiss."

"That was terrifying," I admitted.

"Yeah," Sky agreed, leaning into my shoulder. "But also kinda perfect."

And sitting there, with the party fading into background noise and the lake stretching out before us, I realized they were right. Sometimes the messy, scary, unexpected moments are the ones that matter most.
