The Bear Who Wouldn't Swim
Barnaby was a bear with very big, very fluffy hair. It stuck up in every direction, like a golden brown cloud that had exploded on his head.
"Barnaby!" called his friend Lila the otter from the sparkling lake. "Come swimming with us! The water's perfect today!"
Barnaby shook his head sadly. "I can't. My hair will get all wet and messy. Everyone will laugh at me."
Every afternoon, Barnaby sat under the old oak tree and watched the other animals splash and play. He wished he could join them, but he was too embarrassed about his wild, crazy hair.
One day, a tiny goldfish named Finley swam close to shore and spotted the lonely bear.
"Why don't you come in?" Finley asked, her orange scales shimmering like sunset.
Barnaby sighed. "Look at my hair. It's already a mess. If I go swimming, it'll be even worse."
Finley swam in a happy circle. "But that's what makes you special! I'm just a plain goldfish, but your hair is like a beautiful mane. It's magnificent!"
Barnaby blinked. Nobody had ever called his hair magnificent before.
"Really?" he asked.
"Really!" Finley said. "And look - when you finally come swimming, your hair will float behind you like a wonderful, fluffy cape. You'll be the bravest, most beautiful bear in the whole lake!"
Barnaby looked at the water. Then he looked at Finley, who was smiling so kindly. Slowly, carefully, he dipped one paw in. Then another. Soon, the whole bear slipped into the cool, refreshing water.
Something amazing happened. Barnaby's fluffy hair didn't look messy at all. It floated around him like a soft, golden crown. The other animals gathered around, amazed.
"Barnaby!" Lila cheered. "You look wonderful!"
From that day on, Barnaby swam every day. He and Finley became the best of friends, swimming together every afternoon. And Barnaby finally understood that the things that make us different are exactly what make us beautiful.
