The Bear Who Woke Up

Lily had the messiest hair in the world. Every morning, her brown curls poked out like exploding fireworks. Her mom tried ribbons, clips, and even two brushes at once. But Lily's hair had a mind of its own.

One stormy night, Lily hid under her blanket with Barnaby, her old teddy bear. His left ear flopped down, and his fur was matted from years of hugs. Thunder crashed. Lightning flashed. And something magical happened.

Barnaby blinked.

Lily gasped. Her bear was moving! It was like a zombie from her storybooks, but not scary at all—just wonderful. Barnaby stretched his fuzzy arms and yawned.

"You've been hugging me for seven years," Barnaby rumbled in a voice like warm honey. "I think it's time I hugged you back."

Lily laughed with joy as her bear friend wiggled his nose. Outside, something lowed sadly. They peeked through the window and saw a magnificent golden bull standing in the garden, raindrops glistening on his coat.

"That's Ferdinand," Barnaby whispered. "He's the last star bull from the constellation Taurus. He fell from the sky and can't find his way home."

Lily's messy hair crackled with sparkling magic. She hadn't known—her wild curls weren't messy at all. They were antennas for magic!

"We'll help him!" Lily cried.

Together, the girl, her zombie bear, and the star bull devised a plan. Lily's hair glowed brighter and brighter, creating a beam of light straight to the heavens. Barnaby showed Ferdinand how to follow it. The bull's golden coat began to shine like a thousand diamonds.

With a mighty leap, Ferdinand soared upward, trailing stardust. He became the brightest star in the sky, twinkling with gratitude.

"Thank you," his voice echoed like distant wind chimes. "Friends, look up whenever you need me."

Barnaby yawned again as the magic faded. His eyelids grew heavy.

"Are you going back to being just a bear?" Lily asked, hugging him tight.

"I'll always be your bear," Barnaby sleepily replied. "But tonight, I was so much more."

In the morning, Lily's mom gasped. Her daughter's hair was perfectly braided, woven with tiny flowers that sparkled like tiny stars.

"Did you do this?" her mom asked.

Lily smiled, tapping her nose. "A little magic. A little friendship. And a bear who loved me enough to wake up."
