The Bear Who Wasn't a Zombie
Leo loved his teddy bear Barnaby more than anything. Barnaby had soft brown fur, one button eye, and a red bowtie that Leo had tied himself. Every night, Leo whispered secrets to Barnaby before bed.
One full moon night, Leo woke up to a strange sound. *Thump. Drag. Thump.* He peeked through his eyelids and gasped. Barnaby was moving! But not like a normal bear. Barnaby walked like a zombie toy – stiff and slow, arms straight out, eyes staring at nothing.
"Barnaby?" Leo whispered.
The bear stopped. His button eye sparkled. "Shh!" said Barnaby. "I'm on a secret mission!"
Leo sat up. "You're... you're alive? And you're a spy?"
"Only at night," Barnaby whispered. "I spy on the monsters under the bed. They're not scary – they're just lonely!" Barnaby did a funny little zombie dance. "See? Being zombie-like helps me sneak up on them!"
Leo giggled. "Can I come too?"
Barnaby smiled. "Tonight, you're my spy assistant!"
Together, they tiptoed to the bed. Underneath, three dust bunnies sat in a circle, looking sad.
"Hello," Barnaby said in his zombie voice.
The dust bunnies jumped. "A bear! A zombie bear!"
"I'm not really a zombie," Barnaby explained. "I just walk like one so I can sneak around. But I'm actually a friend. Leo here would like to meet you."
Leo crawled under the bed. "Hi! I'm Leo. This is Barnaby."
The dust bunnies' eyes widened. "You can see us?"
"Of course!" Leo said. "Why wouldn't I?"
"Everyone always runs away," the smallest dust bunny said sadly. "They think we're monsters."
"You're not monsters," Leo said. "You're just fluffy friends I haven't met yet!"
Soon, they were all playing together – Leo, Barnaby the zombie-spy bear, and the three dust bunnies. They had tea parties (with imaginary tea), told jokes, and had zombie dance contests.
When morning came, Barnaby was back to being a regular stuffed bear. Leo hugged him tight.
"Best secret mission ever," Leo whispered.
Barnaby's button eye seemed to wink. Leo learned something wonderful that night: things that seem scary might just be lonely. Sometimes, all it takes is one brave friend – and a bear who walks like a zombie – to turn fear into friendship.
