The Bear Who Waited

cablebearfriend

Lily lived in a small house at the bottom of the tallest mountain she'd ever seen. Every morning, she'd watch the cable car climb up into the clouds, wondering what magical things waited at the top.

One Saturday, Lily's mother gave her a shiny ticket. "Today you ride the cable car alone, sweetie. Be brave."

Lily's heart thumped as she stepped into the little swinging box. The cable pulled her higher and higher, past green trees, past fluffy clouds, until she saw something surprising—a bear sitting on a ledge, waving both paws!

The cable car stopped right beside him. The bear wasn't scary at all. He had kind brown eyes and wore a tiny blue hat.

"Hello!" the bear called out. "I've been waiting for someone to visit. My name is Barnaby."

Lily stepped out carefully. "I'm Lily. Are you... a real bear?"

Barnaby laughed, a warm rumbly sound. "I am! But I'm a lonely bear. Nobody ever comes to the top of the mountain. They're too scared."

Lily sat beside him. "I wasn't scared. I was excited."

Barnaby's eyes twinkled. "That's why the cable car brought you here. It knows brave hearts."

They spent the afternoon talking about everything. Lily showed Barnaby how to skip stones on the mountain pond. Barnaby taught Lily which berries were sweetest and how to spot rain clouds coming.

"You're my first friend," Barnaby said softly.

"And you're mine," Lily smiled.

When the cable car came back down, Lily knew she'd return. She waved until Barnaby was just a tiny speck, but the friendship they'd made would last forever.

Some things are worth reaching for—especially when they lead to the best kind of friend.
