The Bear Who Stayed

Barnaby was no ordinary bear. While other bears spent their days fishing for salmon or hunting for berries, Barnaby spent his days exploring the enchanted forest beyond his mountain home. He loved discovering secret places most creatures never knew existed.

One sunny morning, Barnaby's nose twitched. Something smelled different — like ancient magic and starlight. Following the curious scent, he pushed through a thicket of shimmering silver leaves and gasped.

There, in a hidden clearing, stood a perfect golden pyramid, no taller than a fox, glowing with soft light. And resting beside it was the most magnificent creature Barnaby had ever seen — a sphinx with emerald feathers and eyes like polished amber.

"Another creature come to steal my treasures," sighed the sphinx, lowering her magnificent lion head. "Go away, little bear. Everyone runs when they see me."

But Barnaby didn't run. Instead, he sat down and wiggled his ears. "I'm not here to steal anything. I'm here to make friends."

The sphinx's golden eyes widened. "Friends? With a sphinx? But I'm supposed to be scary!"

"You're not scary," said Barnaby. "You're lonely."

The sphinx's wings trembled. "I've been guarding this pyramid for three hundred years. It holds the First Dream — the very first dream any creature ever had. But nobody stays long enough to learn its secret. They all run away."

Barnaby thought carefully. "Maybe they need a reason to stay. What's your favorite thing to do?"

"I love riddles!" chirped the sphinx, her feathers brightening. "And singing songs about the stars!"

"Then teach me a riddle!" Barnaby wagged his tail.

For the first time in centuries, the sphinx smiled. And that afternoon, while the sun painted the sky in shades of apricot and lavender, a bear and a sphinx sat together sharing riddles, songs, and stories.

By sunset, the pyramid's light had grown warm and welcoming. Barnaby learned that the First Dream inside was simple but powerful: the dream that someone — anyone — would stay and be a friend.

Now, every full moon, creatures from all over the enchanted forest visit. Not to steal or run, but to share riddles, songs, and friendship with Barnaby and the sphinx.

And sometimes, if you listen closely on quiet nights, you can hear them laughing together, proving that the bravest thing you can do is not run away — but stay.
