The Bear Who Saved the Sphinx's Garden

Bernie was not like other bears. While his friends spent their days fishing for salmon and scratching their backs against pine trees, Bernie spent every afternoon practicing his baseball swing. He had made a bat from a sturdy birch branch and found the perfect round stone to use as a ball. But Bernie was lonely. No bear wanted to play baseball with him. They said bears should be doing bear things, not games invented by humans.

One sunny afternoon, Bernie followed a mysterious cable that stretched through the forest. It shimmered with rainbow colors and hummed with a gentle melody. Curious, Bernie tugged the cable, and suddenly—WHOOSH! A magical basket appeared and carried him high above the treetops.

The basket lifted Bernie to the top of Cloud Mountain, where he discovered the most beautiful garden he had ever seen. But something was wrong. The plants were drooping and the flowers looked sad.

"Welcome, little bear," said a voice like wind chimes. Bernie turned to see a sphinx with golden fur and wise amber eyes. "I am Seraphina, guardian of the Moonlight Garden. But I am sad because my magical spinach has stopped glowing. Without it, the garden cannot flourish."

Bernie's eyes widened. Magical spinach? He had never heard of such a thing!

"The spinach needs to be hit with just the right amount of joy and energy to make it glow again," Seraphina explained. "But I am too serious. I only know riddles and puzzles."

Bernie smiled. "I can help!" He pulled out his birch bat and the round stone. "I'll hit the spinach gently, and you can tell me riddles while I do. Your laughter will fill the garden with joy!"

And so Bernie did. He tapped each spinach leaf with perfect precision, just like hitting a baseball. Meanwhile, Seraphina told him funny riddles that made Bernie chuckle. With each laugh and each gentle tap, the spinach began to glow—first green, then silver, then golden!

Soon the whole garden was shining with light. Seraphina was so happy that she danced with Bernie under the moonlight.

"You taught me something important, Bernie," Seraphina said. "Even serious sphinxes need fun and laughter. And you showed me that being different is what makes you special."

Bernie returned to his forest friends the next day, but he wasn't lonely anymore. He visited Seraphina every week, and soon other bears became curious about his magical garden adventures. Eventually, Bernie started a baseball league, and guess who was the best player? Seraphina the sphinx, who could hit the ball farther than anyone!

And sometimes, if you look up at Cloud Mountain on a clear night, you can still see them playing together—a bear, a sphinx, and the glowing spinach that brought them all together.
