The Bear Who Saved My Summer

My parents thought sending me to wilderness camp would "fix" my screen addiction. Joke's on them — I hid my iPhone in my sleeping bag the whole first week.

I was the only one without a perfectly curated aesthetic. Everyone else had their influencer poses down pat. Meanwhile, I was just trying not to look like a lost raccoon.

Then came the night raid.

The seniors dared us to go swimming in the lake at midnight. No flashlights, no phones, just the moon reflecting off the water like shattered glass. I hesitated — what if something went wrong? What if I missed the perfect shot?

But Maya grabbed my hand. "Sometimes you just gotta be in the moment, you know?"

We waded in, the water shockingly cold against our skin. I actually laughed. Like, really laughed — not the filtered laugh I used for TikTok.

Then I heard it. A snap of branches.

We froze. There, not twenty feet away, stood a bear. Massive. Real. Nothing like those filtered ~aesthetic~ wildlife posts.

My heart hammered. I wanted to grab my iPhone, document it, prove I wasn't making it up.

Instead, Maya squeezed my hand tighter. We stayed perfectly still as the bear drank from the far edge of the lake, then vanished into the darkness.

Nobody back home would believe us without proof.

But that was kind of the point, wasn't it?

That night, I left my iPhone in my bag. For the first time in forever, I didn't need proof that I lived. I just lived.

The bear didn't care about followers. The lake didn't need a caption. And maybe, just maybe, neither did I.
