The Bear Who Played Baseball at Midnight

Lily loved pretending to be a spy. She wore her dad's big sunglasses and carried an empty paper towel roll like a telescope, sneaking around her backyard at dusk. That's when she saw him—a enormous brown bear sitting behind home plate at the neighborhood baseball field.

The bear wasn't scary. He was holding a baseball bat between his fuzzy paws, looking sad and lonely. Lily's spy instincts told her to investigate. She crept closer, crunching on autumn leaves.

"Are you lost, Mr. Bear?" she whispered.

The bear jumped! His big brown eyes widened. "Oh, hello little one. I'm Barnaby, and I'm just sad because nobody wants to play baseball with a bear."

Lily gasped. "You can PLAY baseball? I LOVE baseball!"

Barnaby grinned, showing his friendly teeth. "I used to play with all the kids, but then the Zombie Baseball Team came to town."

"ZOMBIE baseball?" Lily's eyes went huge. "Like... real zombies?"

Barnaby laughed, a warm rumbly sound. "No, silly! It's just what the kids call themselves when they walk super slowly and pretend their arms are stiff. They think it's funny!"

Lily giggled. "I do that with my friends too! It's the best!"

"The problem is," Barnaby sighed, "the Zombie Team plays at midnight, and my mom says bears have to sleep then. But I see them through my bedroom window, and they look so happy playing catch under the moonlight."

Lily's spy brain started working. She checked her imaginary spy watch. "What if WE become your team? The Midnight Baseball Club! I can sneak out—my parents never wake up until the rooster crows across the street!"

Barnaby's face lit up like fireworks. "Really? You'd play with ME?"

"Absolutely!" Lily tossed him the baseball. "But first, you have to teach me your secret bear pitch. I saw you throwing to yourself. It looked AMAZING!"

Every night for a whole summer, Lily and Barnaby played baseball under the stars. Sometimes they walked like zombies because Barnaby thought it was hilarious. Sometimes Lily practiced her spy moves while catching fly balls.

The best part? The Zombie Baseball Team noticed them. One night, instead of doing their slow walk, they ran over to join the game. Nobody cared that Barnaby was a bear, or that Lily was a spy, or that they were all supposed to be zombies.

They were just friends playing baseball, making magic in the moonlight.
