The Bear Who Pitched Lightning

Barnaby was no ordinary bear. While other bears slept through summer, Barnaby practiced his baseball pitch in a secret meadow. He could throw a fastball so fast it made the trees shiver.

One evening, a terrible thunderstorm rolled in. Lightning flashed across the sky, and Barnaby heard crying. He peeked through the bushes and saw a small boy named Leo sitting alone on a baseball diamond, tears streaming down his face.

"I'll never make the team," Leo sniffled, clutching his worn-out baseball. "I can't pitch, I can't catch—I can't do anything right."

Barnaby's heart hurt. He knew exactly how that felt. Last year, the forest animals had laughed when he'd tried to join their baseball game. Bears don't play baseball, they'd said.

But then, something magical happened. Lightning struck the outfield—and when it faded, the dirt diamond was glowing like stardust. Barnaby stepped onto the field, and Leo's eyes went wide.

"You're a bear!"

"I am," Barnaby rumbled gently. "And I think you need a friend."

Barnaby picked up the baseball. When he threw it, the ball trailed sparks like a comet. Leo scrambled to catch it, his mitt flashing with light. They started running the bases together, faster and faster, until they were practically flying.

"Again!" Leo laughed, his sadness gone. "Let's play again!"

They played all night under lightning-lit skies. Barnaby taught Leo how to grip the ball just right. Leo showed Barnaby that sometimes the best way to win is to have fun trying.

When morning came, Barnaby had to go back to the forest, but he left something behind—a baseball that glowed faintly, like captured lightning.

"Practice every day," Barnaby whispered. "And remember: even a bear can learn to pitch."

At tryouts the next week, Leo threw a strike so perfect it seemed to spark. The coach stared. "Where did you learn that?"

Leo just smiled, touching his pocket where the glowing baseball sat warm. "I have a very special friend."

Now, whenever lightning storms roll through the valley, if you look closely at the old baseball diamond, you might see a bear and a boy running bases under the stars, playing the most magical game ever played.
