The Bear Who Made a Splash

Barnaby was a bear who loved the water more than anything. While other bears splashed in shallow streams catching fish, Barnaby dreamed of the deep blue lake beyond the forest. Every day, he sat on the shore watching the water sparkle like diamonds in the sun.

One afternoon, Barnaby finally gathered his courage. He waded into the cool lake, his thick fur getting heavier with each step. Something tugged at his paw! Barnaby jumped, but whatever it was didn't let go. A pale green creature with wide eyes floated up beside him. It looked like a zombie frog all ghostly and see-through, almost glowing in the sunlight.

"Please don't be afraid," the frog croaked softly. "I'm Zim. Most animals run away when they see me. They think I'm spooky because I look different."

Barnaby smiled. "I think you look magical! Like a moonbeam that fell into the lake."

Zim's eyes twinkled. "Would you like to see something wonderful? I've been waiting for a friend who wasn't afraid of me."

The frog led Barnaby deeper into the water. To Barnaby's amazement, he could breathe underwater! Zim showed him a hidden kingdom of glowing coral, fish that sang like birds, and ancient treasure chests filled with pearls that held captured wishes.

"I'm the guardian of this world," Zim explained. "But I'm lonely. Everyone who sees me swims away as fast as they can."

Barnaby wrapped his big furry arms around his new friend. "They missed something beautiful because they judged by appearances. I'm glad I stayed."

From that day on, the bear and the zombie frog swam together every afternoon, teaching other forest creatures that true friendship comes from the heart, not from how someone looks. And Barnaby became the first bear in the history of bears who could hold his breath underwater for hours—though some say he was really just holding Zim's hand.
