The Bear Who Loved Swimming

zombiebearswimming

Barnaby was a small brown bear who lived near a sparkling lake. Every morning, he watched the fish swim and wished he could join them. But bears don't swim, his mother had told him. They fish from the shore, they splash in shallow water, but they don't swim like the fish.

One hot summer day, Barnaby heard giggling by the lake. He peeked through the bushes and saw children playing a game called Zombie Tag. They walked slowly with arms outstretched, making funny faces and groaning playfully. When tagged, they became zombies too! Barnaby thought it looked like the most wonderful game ever.

That evening, Barnaby couldn't stop thinking about both swimming and the zombie game. His friend Lila, a wise old turtle, noticed his sadness.

'What troubles you, little bear?' she asked.

Barnaby sighed. 'I want to swim like the fish, but Mother says bears don't swim.'

Lila smiled. 'Did you know that I've been swimming for over a hundred years? And do you know how I learned?'

Barnaby shook his head.

'I believed I could,' Lila said. 'Sometimes the only thing stopping us is what we think we know.'

The next morning, Barnaby waded into the water. At first, he paddled nervously. But then he remembered the zombie game from yesterday. Instead of being afraid, he did a silly zombie walk—arms outstretched, making funny faces—and splashed into deeper water.

To his surprise, his big bear paws made excellent paddles! His thick fur kept him warm. Barnaby was swimming!

'You did it!' Lila called from the shore.

Barnaby swam all day, discovering underwater caves and rainbow-colored fish. When he told his mother, she was amazed. She even joined him for a sunset swim.

From that day on, Barnaby taught all the young bears how to swim. And every lesson started with a zombie dance, because sometimes being silly helps you be brave. Barnaby learned that believing in yourself is the first step to doing impossible things.
