The Bear Who Loved Riddles
Lily's toes dangled in the cool **water** of Miller's Pond, watching the ripples spread like magic rings. She was supposed to be watching her little brother, but instead she'd discovered something wonderful—her mom's old **iPhone**, forgotten at the bottom of her beach bag, had a strange glowing app she'd never seen before.
When her finger touched the screen, the pond **water** began to swirl and sparkle, until it formed a shimmering doorway. Lily stepped through, her heart pounding like tiny drums.
On the other side stood a massive **bear** with fur the color of honey and sunshine. But this bear wasn't scary—he was wearing a tiny red vest and reading a book upside down!
"Oh thank goodness!" The bear closed his book with a delighted huff. "I'm Barnaby, and I've been **running** in circles for hours trying to solve the Great Sphinx's riddle before sunset. Will you help me?"
Lily nodded vigorously. Together they hurried through a forest of candy-striped trees until they reached an ancient stone platform. There sat the Sphinx—a magnificent creature with lion paws, eagle wings, and a face full of ancient wisdom.
"What has hands but cannot clap?" the Sphinx rumbled, her eyes glowing like gentle stars.
Barnaby the bear wrung his paws nervously. "A clock? No, that didn't work last time. A potato? No..." He looked ready to cry.
Lily thought hard, remembering something her nana had taught her. "A clock!" she exclaimed. "Because it has hands that move around but they can't clap!"
The Sphinx's face broke into a radiant smile. "Correct, young one. And you, Barnaby—your true treasure was friendship all along."
She waved her paw, and the **iPhone** in Lily's pocket began to glow warm. "This device brought you together because kindness summons magic across all worlds. Remember: asking for help isn't weakness—it's the bravest thing you can do."
Lily and Barnaby hugged, their fur and skin warm against each other. "I'll never forget you," Lily whispered.
"And I'll never stop believing in magic," Barnaby promised.
When Lily opened her eyes, she was back at Miller's Pond. The **water** lapped peacefully at her toes, and her phone sat beside her on the grass, perfectly fine. But in her pocket was a single golden bear hair, shimmering like captured sunlight.
Some accidents, Lily realized, squeezing the hair between her fingers, are actually adventures in disguise.
