The Bear Who Loved Orange Dreams
Barnaby was a bear with fur the color of storm clouds and a heart full of sunshine. Every morning, he'd wake up early and tiptoe through the whispering forest until he reached the secret place—the old swimming pool behind the abandoned house.
The pool was empty now, no longer filled with water for splashing. But something magical had happened instead. A beautiful orange tree had grown right through the cracked concrete, its branches heavy with the sweetest oranges anyone had ever tasted.
Barnaby loved these oranges. Each morning, he'd pick one, peel it slowly, and let the juice drip down his paws while he watched something amazing happen.
In the deep end of the pool, where rainwater had collected over the years, lived a tiny goldfish named Glimmer. She wasn't an ordinary fish—she could jump! And every time Barnaby ate an orange, Glimmer would leap from the water to catch the falling peel, dancing through the air like a spark of sunset.
"Why do you like orange peels so much?" Barnaby asked one day.
Glimmer flipped back into the water with a splash. "Because they're bright and cheerful, just like you! Even though you're a big, dark bear, you have the sunniest heart."
Barnaby felt something warm inside. He'd always worried he was too different from the other bears. They were serious hunters. He was just a bear who loved oranges and making friends with fish.
That autumn, other bears came through the forest, hungry and grumpy. They laughed at Barnaby. "Why do you spend time with a fish? Why do you eat fruit instead of fish like a real bear?"
Barnaby almost cried. But then Glimmer jumped high—higher than ever before—and landed right on his nose.
"Being yourself is the bravest thing you can do," she whispered. "And true friends love you for who you are."
Barnaby stood tall. He shared his oranges with the grumpy bears. They tried them. Their eyes widened. They smiled. Soon, all the bears were gathering around the orange pool, listening to Glimmer's stories and learning that different isn't bad—it's magical.
And every morning, Barnaby still wakes up early, peels an orange, and watches his golden friend dance through the air, knowing that friendship comes in all sizes, shapes, and colors.
