The Bear Who Loved Baseball
Lily loved baseball. Every summer afternoon, she'd grab her favorite glove and run to the park, hoping for a game. But nobody ever wanted to play with the new girl in town.
One day, Lily threw her baseball as hard as she could toward the forest. Whoosh! It disappeared into the trees. Tears filled her eyes as she trudged into the woods to find it.
"Hello?" a deep voice rumbled.
Lily gasped. Behind a giant oak tree sat the biggest bear she'd ever seen! But this bear wasn't scary. He held Lily's baseball carefully in his enormous paws.
"Is this yours?" the bear asked gently. "I'm Barnaby."
"I'm Lily," she whispered, stepping closer. "You can talk?"
"Bears talk all the time," Barnaby smiled. "Humans just rarely listen."
Barnaby explained that he'd watched children play baseball for years, dreaming of joining in. He showed Lily how he'd practiced throwing rocks at trees—swing, hop, toss! He even had his own lucky pinecone baseball.
"Teach me the real game?" Barnaby asked hopefully.
Lily's heart fluttered. This was amazing! She spent the afternoon teaching Barnaby how to hold a bat, how to catch, and how to run bases (though he mostly knocked them over by accident). They laughed until their bellies hurt.
The next day, Lily brought Barnaby to the park. The other kids stared—then their eyes widened with wonder when they saw how beautifully the bear could play. Soon everyone wanted to be Barnaby's friend.
That summer, the most unusual baseball team ever played every sunset: children and one magical bear who taught them that the best friends come in the most unexpected packages, and that everyone deserves a chance to play the game they love.
