The Bear Who Loved Baseball
Ten-year-old Toby loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon, he'd practice pitching in his backyard while his golden retriever, Barnaby, chased the balls he missed.
One stormy afternoon, as clouds gathered overhead, a bolt of lightning flashed across the sky. Toby didn't care—he kept pitching. Barnaby suddenly stopped chasing and froze, staring into the dense woods behind their house. His tail wagged excitedly.
"What is it, buddy?" Toby asked.
Barnaby sprinted into the forest. Toby chased after his dog, winding through pine trees until—CRACK! Another lightning bolt illuminated something amazing.
There, in a grassy clearing, stood a massive brown bear. But this wasn't a scary bear. This bear was holding a baseball bat and wearing an old cap on his fuzzy head.
The bear spotted Toby and waved. Toby waved back, amazed.
"I'm Bruno," the bear said in a deep, friendly voice. "Want to play?"
Toby couldn't believe it! He and Bruno played catch while Barnaby ran between them, barking happily. Bruno was terrible at catching, but he laughed every time he dropped the ball. As they played, Toby noticed something—Bruno seemed lonely.
"Do you have anyone to play with?" Toby asked.
Bruno shook his big head. "Other animals are too scared. They think bears are only fierce and angry."
Toby smiled. "They're wrong. You're the nicest bear I've ever met."
They played until the rain began to fall. Bruno gave Toby a bear hug that nearly squeezed him tight, but Toby didn't mind.
"Come back tomorrow?" Bruno asked hopefully.
"Every day!" Toby promised.
As they walked home, Barnaby trotting proudly beside them, Toby realized something important: you should never judge someone before you really know them. Even a bear could love baseball, and even a supposed monster could become your best friend.
From that day on, the three friends played together, and Toby learned that the best surprises come when you keep your heart—and your baseball glove—wide open.
