The Bear Who Liked Lightning

bearlightninghairspy

Mia had the puffiest, curliest hair in her whole class. It bounced when she walked and stood straight up when she rubbed it on the carpet. Her hair was her favorite thing about herself.

One stormy night, Mia sat by her window watching lightning flash across the sky. CRACK! BOOM! Each bolt made the room glow purple and white. Suddenly, she noticed something strange. Her stuffed bear Barnaby was moving.

Barnaby, the soft brown bear with the shiny black nose, sat up on her bed. He stretched his fuzzy arms and yawned.

"About time you noticed me," Barnaby said. "I've been waiting for the right lightning storm."

Mia's eyes went huge. "You can talk?"

"I can do much more than talk," Barnaby whispered, putting a fuzzy paw to his lips. "I'm a spy from the Cloud Kingdom. My job is to collect lightning bolts before they hit the ground. But tonight, my fur got too wet and I lost my powers."

"You're a SPY?" Mia whispered back, feeling important just knowing this secret.

"Yes, and I need your help. The biggest lightning bolt of the year is coming in three minutes. If we don't catch it, it'll knock down all the trees in the park!"

Mia's curly hair started to tingle. She felt magical somehow. "What should we do?"

Barnaby pointed at her hair. "Your hair! It's perfect for catching lightning! Those curls are like little lightning traps!"

Mia stood by the window as Barnaby counted down. "Three... two... one... NOW!"

The biggest, brightest lightning bolt anyone had ever seen zoomed toward them. Mia's hair reached up like curly antennas and ZAP! The lightning landed right in her curls, turning them glowing purple for just a second.

"You did it!" Barnaby cheered. "Now the lightning is safe!"

Mia's hair stopped glowing, but it felt warmer and softer than before. Barnaby gave her a bear hug.

"You're not just my owner anymore," the bear spy whispered. "You're my helper now too. When you see your hair sparkle during a storm, you'll know I'm working nearby."

That night, Mia fell asleep with Barnaby curled up beside her. She wasn't just a girl with wild hair anymore. She was a lightning-catching spy's secret helper, and that was the most magical thing of all.
