The Bear Who Learned to Swim
Barnaby was a small brown bear who lived at the edge of the Sparkling Lake. Every day, he would sit on the rocky shore and watch other animals play in the water. Rabbits splashed, ducks paddled, and fish jumped, but Barnaby never joined them. He was afraid.
One warm afternoon, as the sun began to set, something unusual caught Barnaby's eye. An orange fish leaped from the water, its scales shimmering like tiny stars before it splashed back down. Barnaby had never seen an orange fish before!
"Hello there!" called a deep voice. Barnaby jumped and looked around. Standing nearby was a massive bull with a golden nose ring and the kindest eyes he'd ever seen. "I'm Ferdinand. What brings you to the water's edge today?"
Barnaby explained how he wanted to swim but was scared. The bull nodded wisely. "I was afraid too, until I discovered something magical. Want to see my secret?"
Ferdinand led Barnaby to a shallow cove where the water glowed with an orange light from the setting sun. "This is the Swimming Orange," the bull explained. "When the sun hits the water just right, it turns everything the color of courage. Watch!"
To Barnaby's amazement, Ferdinand stepped into the orange-tinted water and began swimming beautifully. The bull's large body floated effortlessly, and he looked like he was dancing.
"Your turn," Ferdinand said gently. "Remember, the orange water is special. It makes bears brave and bulls graceful."
Barnaby's heart raced, but he remembered the orange fish—how it had jumped so fearlessly. He dipped one paw in the magical orange water. It felt warm and welcoming. Then another paw. Soon, his whole body was in the water, and to his surprise, he was floating!
"I'm swimming!" Barnaby cheered, paddling around while Ferdinand swam beside him. The bear and the bull spent the whole evening in the orange glow, racing and playing.
As night fell and the orange light faded, Barnaby realized something important. The water hadn't been magical at all—the magic had been inside him all along, and Ferdinand had helped him find it.
"Thank you," Barnaby whispered as they emerged from the lake, water dripping from their fur. "For showing me that sometimes, you just need a friend to help you be brave."
From that day on, Barnaby swam every day, sometimes alone, sometimes with Ferdinand. And whenever the sun set and turned the water orange, he remembered the day he learned that true friendship is the bravest adventure of all.
