The Bear Who Learned to Splash

Barnaby was a small bear with very big dreams. Every summer afternoon, he would sit by the edge of the crystal-blue pool in his backyard, watching his friends play baseball on the grass beyond. They would shout and laugh, running around the bases under the warm sun, while Barnaby stayed on the sidelines.

You see, Barnaby was afraid of water. His brother had told him stories about scary things lurking in pools, and Barnaby believed every word.

One day, as Barnaby sat dipping his fuzzy toes in the shallow end, something magical happened. Three tiny goldfish with scales that shimmered like rainbows popped up from the water!

"We're the Splash Sisters!" said the biggest goldfish, whose name was Glitter. "I'm Glitter, and this is Glimmer and Glow. Why do you look so sad?"

Barnaby explained about the baseball games and his fear of water. Glimmer swam close to his foot. "But water isn't scary! It's like flying, but wetter. Want us to teach you?"

For the next week, while Barnaby's friends were running around playing baseball, the Splash Sisters taught Barnaby how to blow bubbles, how to float like a leaf, and finally how to swim! They showed him that the pool held no monsters—only magic and friendship.

Then came the day of the Big Baseball Game. Barnaby's team was losing by one run when—SPLASH!—the ball flew into the pool!

Everyone froze. Nobody wanted to go in after it.

"I'll get it!" Barnaby shouted. He dove in like a brave little submarine, swimming gracefully to the bottom where the ball rested. The three goldfish cheered him on, doing underwater flips of joy.

When Barnaby surfaced with the ball, his team erupted in cheers! His friend Lily pulled him out of the water. "Since when can you swim like that?" she asked amazed.

"Since I made some really good friends," Barnaby said, winking at the pool where three tiny goldfish waved their fins in secret celebration.

That day, Barnaby learned something wonderful: sometimes the things we're most afraid of turn out to be our greatest adventures. And from then on, whenever he played baseball, he made sure his pool was always clean—just in case the Splash Sisters wanted to watch the game from their magical watery stadium.
