The Bear Who Learned to Play

bearpadelfriend

Lily's favorite stuffed bear, Barnaby, sat on her bed every morning watching her get ready for school. He had button eyes and one ear that flopped down. Lily loved Barnaby more than anything in the world.

One day, Lily came home from school upset. "No one wants to play with me at recess," she told Barnaby, hugging him tight. "I'm all alone."

That night, something magical happened. When the moonlight streamed through Lily's window, Barnaby's button eyes twinkled. He stretched his fuzzy arms and wiggled his paws.

"Lily," Barnaby whispered, "tomorrow, I'll come with you."

Lily couldn't believe her ears! Her bear was talking!

The next day, Lily tucked Barnaby into her backpack. During recess, she sat alone on the bench until Barnaby peeked out.

"Look at that game!" Barnaby pointed his fuzzy paw at the padel court nearby. Children were hitting a ball with small paddles, laughing and running.

"That's padel," Lily explained. "I've never played. It looks hard."

"Nothing's hard with a friend by your side," Barnaby said bravely.

Lily carried Barnaby to the padel court. A kind coach named Mr. Rivera smiled. "Would you like to learn?"

Barnaby, tucked in Lily's pocket, whispered tips. "Watch the ball! Bend your knees! You can do it!"

Lily swung her paddle and—SWISH! The ball flew over the net.

"Wonderful!" cheered Mr. Rivera. Other children gathered around. "Want to play with us?"

Soon, Lily was running and laughing, hitting the ball back and forth. Barnaby peeked from her pocket, his button eyes shining with joy.

"You made a friend!" Barnaby whispered as Lily walked home with a new classmate named Maya.

Lily hugged her bear tight under the evening stars. "Thank you, Barnaby. You're the best friend ever."

Barnaby's flopped ear wiggled. "And you're mine, Lily. Always."

That night, as Lily slept, Barnaby watched her with his button eyes, knowing that sometimes the bravest things happen when we try something new—together.
