The Bear Who Learned to Float

Barnaby was a bear with a big problem. Every summer, all the animals gathered at Sparkle Creek for the most fun day of the year—Splash Day! But Barnaby had never joined them. You see, Barnaby was afraid of the water.

"Bears aren't made for swimming," he told himself, watching from behind a tree as rabbits hopped in the shallow end and frogs dove like tiny Olympic champions.

One morning, something changed. A golden retriever named Rosie arrived in the forest. She was visiting her grandma who lived in the old oak tree. Rosie had the shiniest coat Barnaby had ever seen, and when she smiled, her whole face wiggled.

"Want to come swimming?" Rosie asked, spotting Barnaby near the creek's edge.

"Oh no," Barnaby shook his head. "Bears sink. Everyone knows that."

Rosie laughed—a happy, bubbly sound. "That's not true! My best friend back home is a bear named Bruno, and he loves swimming. Want to know his secret?"

Barnaby nodded, his eyes wide.

"Magic floating rocks," Rosie whispered mysteriously. "They're hidden at the bottom of the creek, and if you find one, you can float forever!"

Barnaby's heart raced. Magic floating rocks? He stepped closer to the water. Rosie waded in, splashing happily. "Come on! I'll help you look!"

Slowly, carefully, Barnaby stepped into the cool creek. The water tickled his toes. Rosie took his paw. "I won't let anything happen to you. We'll find a magic rock together."

They searched. Barnaby felt the smooth stones beneath his feet. Some were slippery. Some were rough. But none seemed magical. Yet something else was happening—Barnaby was getting more comfortable. He was dog-paddling alongside Rosie, then kicking his legs, then floating on his back!

"Look at you!" Rosie cheered. "You're doing it!"

Barnaby laughed so hard he almost sank. "I'm swimming! I'm really swimming!"

Later, as they dried off in the sun, Barnaby asked, "Which rock was the magic one?"

Rosie grinned. "Oh, Barnaby. The magic wasn't in a rock. The magic was believing in yourself—and having a friend who believes in you too."

That Splash Day, Barnaby swam with all the other animals. He even taught the little rabbits how to float. And every summer after that, Barnaby and Rosie would meet at Sparkle Creek, ready for new adventures together.

Sometimes the bravest thing you can do is try something scary—especially when you have a good friend by your side.
