The Bear Who Knew Better

zombiefriendbear

Leo clutched his stuffed bear, Barnaby, as he peeked through the window. Halloween night was spooky, but not as spooky as what he saw in his neighbor's garden.

A zombie!

At least, that's what it looked like. It stumbled around Mr. Henderson's pumpkin patch, arms outstretched, making soft moaning sounds. Leo's heart pounded. But Barnaby seemed to wiggle in his arms, as if trying to tell him something.

Leo tiptoed outside, Barnaby tucked under his arm. The full moon cast silvery light on the zombie, who was now sitting on a pumpkin, looking sad.

"Hello?" Leo called out bravely.

The zombie jumped! "Oh! You scared me!" It said—in a perfectly normal voice.

Leo stepped closer. "You're not a real zombie?"

"Nope! I'm Max, dressed up for the Halloween party at the community center. But I got lost, and my mask won't come off, and I tripped over this pumpkin, and..." Max sniffled. "I just wanted to find a friend to help me."

Barnaby seemed to smile. Leo suddenly understood.

"I'll be your friend," Leo said. "And Barnaby will help too. He's very wise for a bear."

Together, they figured out how to undo the mask's tricky clasp. Max's face appeared, grinning with relief.

"Thanks! You're the best friend ever," Max said.

Leo smiled, hugging Barnaby tight. Sometimes things that seem scary at first are just misunderstood people looking for kindness. And sometimes, the best adventures start when you're brave enough to say hello.

"Want to go to the Halloween party together?" Leo asked.

"Yes!" Max cheered. "But first—can Barnaby come too?"

Barnaby didn't answer, but Leo could have sworn the bear's button eyes twinkled.

That night, Leo learned that courage isn't about not being scared. It's about being kind even when you are. And that's the best magic of all.
