The Bear Who Kept Watch

Margaret's fingers trembled slightly as she lifted the wooden box from the top shelf of her closet. Dust motes danced in the afternoon sunlight streaming through the window. Inside lay Button, her childhood teddy bear—missing most of his original brown fur, his glass eye replaced with a mismatched button her father had sewn on during the war years. Margaret smiled, remembering how she'd whispered her childhood secrets into his fuzzy ear.

"Grandma! What's that?" Seven-year-old Emma stood in the doorway, her curly brown hair a wild halo around her face. The girl was always sneaking up on people—she announced that morning she wanted to be a spy when she grew up. Margaret had found her hiding behind the living room curtains earlier, armed with a plastic magnifying glass and grave determination.

"This was my best friend when I was your age," Margaret said, beckoning Emma closer. "His name is Button."

Emma climbed onto the bed beside her grandmother, carefully examining the worn bear. "He looks like he's seen some adventures."

"He has," Margaret said softly. "He listened when I was scared. He stayed awake when I couldn't sleep. He was there when my brother went overseas and didn't come back." She paused, the old ache familiar and somehow precious now. "You know, being a spy means you notice things. But loving someone means you remember things."

Emma's expression grew solemn. She reached out and touched Button's remaining ear. "Can I tell him a secret?"

"Of course, sweetheart. He's very good at keeping them."

Emma leaned close and whispered something that made Button's ear twitch. When she pulled back, her eyes held wisdom beyond her years. "I told him I hope I have gray hair just like yours someday. Because it means I got to live a long, happy life."

Margaret felt tears prick her eyes. She drew Emma close, the scent of childhood—milk and sunshine and possibility—filling her senses. Some treasures weren't kept in boxes at all.

"You know what?" Margaret whispered back. "Button has been spying on our family for three generations. And I think he just discovered the best secret of all."
