The Bear Who Hit Homers
Tommy's room was magical. His stuffed bear Barnaby knew it, even if Tommy didn't. Every night after bedtime, Barnaby stretched his fuzzy arms and tiptoed around the room, touching all of Tommy's treasures.
One evening, Barnaby discovered Tommy's dad's old baseball on the shelf. It smelled like summer games and cheers from the crowd. Barnaby picked it up, surprised that his paws could grip it perfectly.
"What are you doing?" whispered a voice from the toy box.
Out shuffled Zombie Zed, Tommy's green plastic action figure. Zed moved slowly and carefully, his arms outstretched like he was reaching for the biggest hug ever.
"I'm going to play baseball," Barnaby said, feeling brave. "Will you play with me?"
Zed's eyes lit up. "I'd love to! But I don't know how."
Barnaby smiled. "I'll teach you. Baseball is about believing in yourself, even when the pitch looks too fast."
They played all night under the moonlight coming through the window. Zed learned to hit the ball, and Barnaby learned that even a zombie could be the best friend you ever had.
When morning came, they heard something buzzing. It was Tommy's dad's iphone, lighting up on the nightstand. Someone was calling!
"What if we answer it?" Zed suggested. "Maybe it's an adventure!"
Barnaby nodded. Together, they tapped the screen. It was Grandpa calling to wish Tommy good luck for his big baseball game that day.
"You can do it, champ!" Grandpa's voice said through the phone. "Just remember — the best players are the ones who have fun and help their teammates."
Barnaby and Zed looked at each other and smiled. Grandpa was right.
When Tommy woke up, he found his baseball on the floor and his dad's phone on the nightstand, a happy memory of Grandpa's voice still glowing on the screen. But most amazing of all, Zombie Zed and Barnaby the Bear were positioned perfectly, as if they'd been having the most wonderful game of baseball all night long.
Tommy smiled, hugging Barnaby tight. "I think I'm going to hit a home run today," he whispered. "And I'm going to help my teammates too."
Barnaby's button eyes twinkled. Some magic, after all, was meant to be shared.
