The Bear Who Gave Wishes
Lily loved the old forest behind her house. Every afternoon, she would wander past the oak trees and through the ferns until she reached the sparkling stream that wound through the woods like a silver ribbon.
One especially hot summer day, Lily sat by the water, dipping her toes in the cool current. She had just moved to this town and hadn't made any friends yet. The other children seemed to have their own groups already.
'I wish I had someone to talk to,' she whispered to her reflection.
Suddenly, the water began to glow. A magnificent creature emerged from the trees—a bear with fur the color of autumn leaves and eyes that shone like golden honey. Lily's heart beat fast, but she didn't run.
'I am Barnaby,' the bear said in a rumbly, kind voice. 'I've watched you sit here every day. You seem lonely.'
Lily couldn't believe it. A talking bear! 'I am lonely,' she admitted. 'I just moved here.'
Barnaby sat beside her. 'This stream is special. If you make a wish with a true heart, and help someone else with their wish, magic happens.' He touched the water with his paw. Ripples spread outward, forming pictures in the surface—images of other children playing alone.
Lily watched as the reflections showed her a sad boy reading by himself, a girl drawing pictures with no one to show them to, and others who seemed friendless too.
'They need friends too,' Lily said. 'Can you show me where to find them?'
For the rest of the summer, Lily visited the forest every day. Barnaby helped her find each lonely child, and soon they were all playing together by the magical stream. The bear became their special secret, their guardian friend who taught them that the best way to find friendship is to help others find it too.
And whenever Lily looked at the water now, she didn't just see her reflection anymore. She saw all her new friends, and she knew that the best wishes are the ones you help come true for someone else.
