The Bear Who Forgot How to Swim
Lily loved running through the Whispering Woods, her feet dancing over mossy stones and fallen leaves. Every afternoon after school, she would race the squirrels and chase the butterflies until her cheeks turned rosy pink.
One hot summer day, while running along the sparkling Rainbow River, Lily heard the saddest sound she had ever heard. It was a deep, lonely sigh coming from behind a large willow tree.
Curious, Lily peeked around the trunk and gasped. There sat the biggest, fluffiest bear she had ever seen! But this bear wasn't scary at all. He had gentle brown eyes and fur the color of honey and cinnamon mixed together.
"What's wrong, Mr. Bear?" Lily asked bravely.
The bear looked up with tears in his eyes. "I'm Barnaby, and I've forgotten how to swim. All the other bears are swimming in the river, having fun and catching fish. But I'm too afraid to try again."
Lily's heart went out to Barnaby. She remembered when she was little and afraid to put her face in the water. Her grandmother had held her hand and taught her to be brave.
"I'll help you, Barnaby!" Lily declared. "My grandma taught me that being brave doesn't mean not being scared. It means being scared but doing it anyway!"
Every day that week, Lily came back after school. She showed Barnaby how to splash his paws, how to hold his breath, and how to kick his strong legs. Barnaby practiced and practiced, sometimes tumbling into the water with a big SPLASH!
On the seventh day, something magical happened. Barnaby took a deep breath, closed his eyes, and paddled into the river. His big bear body floated up like a fluffy boat! He was swimming!
"I'm doing it! I'm really swimming!" Barnaby cheered, splashing water everywhere.
Lily clapped and cheered, her heart full of joy. She had helped a bear remember how to swim!
From that day on, Barnaby and Lily became the best of friends. Sometimes Lily would go running alongside the river while Barnaby swam beside her, his big bear head bobbing in the water. Other times, they would have splashing contests and see who could make the biggest waves.
Lily learned that true friendship means helping each other be brave. And Barnaby learned that with a kind friend by your side, even the scariest things can become the most wonderful adventures.
And sometimes, if you look very carefully at the Rainbow River on a sunny afternoon, you might still see them there — a girl running along the bank and a bear swimming alongside, both laughing together in the magic of friendship.
