The Bear Who Forgot How to Dance
Lily's golden retriever, Buster, had the most marvelous nose. He could smell a hidden cookie from three rooms away. So when Buster started tugging Lily's pajama sleeve just as the moon rose, she knew something magical was afoot.
They tiptoed through the garden, past the sleepy oak tree, into the whispering woods. There, in a moonlit clearing, stood the most peculiar sight. A great brown bear was shuffling in circles, moving stiff and strange, like he was stuck in a dream.
"It's the zombie-bear spell!" whispered an ancient voice from above. An owl perched on a branch, her feathers shimmering like starlight. "Every hundred years, a bear forgets the dance of joy. Unless someone helps them remember by sunrise, they'll shuffle forever."
Lily's heart squeezed. Buster whined softly, nudging the bear's giant paw. The bear looked up with sad, confused eyes.
"I know!" Lily gasped, digging into her pocket. She'd saved her favorite treat from lunch—a bright, sweet orange. "My grandma says oranges carry sunshine inside them!"
She peeled the orange, and its citrusy perfume filled the clearing. Tiny sparks of golden light drifted up from the rind. The bear's nose twitched. Hope flickered in his eyes.
"Dance with us!" Lily called, starting a silly wiggling dance. Buster spun in happy circles, barking with delight. The bear watched, then—slowly, creakily—began to sway.
Lily passed him an orange segment. The bear took it, chewed thoughtfully, and suddenly his eyes brightened. He began to wiggle too! Faster and happier, until the whole clearing was dancing—girl, dog, bear, even the owl bobbing on her branch.
As the first sunbeam kissed the treetops, the bear hugged Lily gently with his enormous paws. He gifted her three perfect oranges from his secret grove and lumbered away, dancing into the dawn.
That night, Lily learned something wonderful: even the biggest, grumpiest problems can be solved with a little kindness, a faithful friend, and the courage to dance—especially when sunshine is involved.
