The Bear Who Forgot

Barnaby was a bear who had forgotten how to be a bear. He lumbered through the forest like a sleepwalker, his fur matted and dull, his eyes half-closed. The other animals whispered that he had become a zombie bear, wandering without purpose, without joy. But Barnaby wasn't scary at all—just lonely and lost.

One stormy evening, as thunder rumbled like a hungry tummy, little Pip the mouse spotted Barnaby shivering under a tree. Pip was small, but her heart was enormous. She scurried over with an orange from her grandmother's tree.

"Would you like this?" Pip squeaked, holding up the bright fruit. "It's sweet like sunshine."

Barnaby stared blankly. The orange rolled from his paws.

Suddenly, CRACK! A bolt of lightning struck the old oak tree above them. The whole trunk glowed with an brilliant orange light, as if the sun itself had been trapped inside the wood.

Barnaby's eyes snapped open. The light! The color! Something stirred in his memory—a warm feeling, like honey, like hugs, like home.

"Orange," he whispered, the first word he'd spoken in months.

Pip's eyes widened. "You remember!"

The lightning's magic had awakened something inside Barnaby. The orange glow reminded him of autumn leaves, of sunset, of his mother's fur. He remembered who he was: a bear who loved to dance in the rain, who collected pretty stones, who helped little animals cross the stream.

"I was so sad I forgot myself," Barnaby rumbled, tears in his eyes. "But you helped me remember."

Pip hugged his giant paw. "Friends don't let friends forget."

From that day on, Barnaby carried a small orange stone everywhere. Whenever he felt the gray fog returning, he'd look at it and remember: even the darkest storms can bring the most beautiful light. And sometimes, the smallest friends can spark the biggest changes.

The forest animals no longer called him a zombie bear. They called him Barnaby, the bear whose heart shone orange like lightning, bright and warm and full of love.
