The Bear Who Dreamed of Swimming

Barnaby was a very large bear with a very small problem. He lived in a cozy cave near a sparkling blue lake, but Barnaby had never learned to swim.

"Bears are supposed to swim," his mama had told him when he was little. "We're born for the water!"

But Barnaby was afraid. The water looked so deep, so mysterious, so... wet!

One sunny afternoon, Barnaby sat by the lake watching dragonflies zoom over the surface. A splash made him jump. A tiny orange head popped up!

"Hello there!" chirped a friendly voice.

Barnaby blinked. "Did you just talk?"

"I'm Glitter," said the little goldfish, flicking her shimmering tail. "And you're the bear who's been staring at my lake for three summers but never comes in!"

Barnaby hung his head. "I'm too big. I'll sink like a stone."

Glitter swam closer. "That's silly! My friend Oliver is an enormous turtle, and he floats beautifully. Want to meet him?"

Something magical twinkled in Glitter's golden scales. Barnaby felt brave suddenly.

"Okay," he whispered.

He stepped into the cool water. One paw. Two paws. Then...

"Wheeeee!" Barnaby gasped. He wasn't sinking! The water held him like a gentle hug.

Glitter danced around his nose. "See? You're a natural! Now kick your legs like you're running through a meadow!"

Barnaby kicked. He paddled. He was swimming! He felt light as a feather, free as a cloud.

Oliver the ancient turtle surfaced beside them. "About time, bear! We've been waiting for you to join our swimming club!"

That summer, Barnaby swam every day. He played tag with the fish, raced the dragonflies, and sometimes just floated on his back watching clouds.

One evening, Glitter asked, "Why were you so afraid?"

Barnaby smiled. "I thought I had to be small to be graceful. But now I know — being yourself is the most beautiful thing you can be."

The goldfish twinkled. "And that, my big friend, is the magic that makes you truly shine."

From then on, whenever Barnaby saw another creature afraid to try something new, he'd say, "Come on in! The water's perfect for bears AND goldfish AND everyone in between!"

And somehow, just somehow, they always found the courage to take that first splash.
