The Bear Who Dreamed of Swimming
Bruno was a bear with a secret. While other bears spent their days catching fish from the riverbank, Bruno spent his time watching the water shimmer in the sunlight. He wanted to go swimming, but bears don't swim. At least, that's what his mother had always told him.
One hot summer afternoon, Bruno crept to the edge of Sparkle Lake. The water looked cool and inviting, reflecting puffy clouds that floated across the sky. He dipped one paw in. Then another.
"Hello down there!" called a tiny voice.
Bruno jumped. A small goldfish with scales like tiny sunsets poked her head above the water.
"I'm Glimmer," she said. "Are you going to join me?"
"Bears can't swim," Bruno sighed, his shoulders dropping.
Glimmer laughed, sending ripples across the lake. "That's not true! My grandfather knew a bear who swam all the way to the moon and back. Well, the moon's reflection, anyway."
Bruno's eyes went wide. "Really?"
"Really! You just have to trust the water. It wants to hold you, not hurt you."
Bruno took a deep breath. Slowly, carefully, he stepped into the lake. The cool water felt like a gentle hug. Glimmer swam beside him, guiding him deeper.
"Kick your paws like you're dancing," she said.
Bruno kicked. And then he was floating! He was swimming!
They spent the afternoon playing together - Glimmer leaping through the air like a tiny rainbow and Bruno paddling with surprising grace. As the sun began to set, painting the sky in shades of orange and pink, Bruno knew he had found something special.
"Will you be my friend?" Bruno asked, feeling shy.
Glimmer smiled, her scales catching the last golden rays of sunlight. "I already am."
From that day on, Bruno returned to Sparkle Lake every summer. The other bears thought he was strange, but Bruno didn't mind. He had learned something wonderful: sometimes the most unlikely friendships are the most magical of all, and anyone can learn to swim - they just need a friend to believe in them.
