The Bear Who Danced with Lightning
Barnaby was a bear who loved many things. He loved honey, he loved napping in sunbeams, and he loved scratching his back against rough pine trees. But there was one thing Barnaby did NOT love.
Swimming.
All the other bears splashed and played in the sparkling mountain stream, but Barnaby stayed on the dry, safe grassy bank. "Water is wet and cold and scary," he would grumble.
Then he met Goldie, a tiny goldfish with scales that shimmied like rainbow sequins when she swam. She lived in a crystal-clear pond near Barnaby's favorite cave.
"Why don't you come in?" Goldie asked one day, popping her head above the surface. "The water feels like a cool hug on a hot day!"
Barnaby shook his shaggy head. "Bears are made for land, not water. I'm too big and clumsy."
Goldie laughed bubbles. "That's what makes it fun! Sometimes being clumsy means you're just discovering a new way to dance."
One evening, as Barnaby sat by the pond watching Goldie do loop-de-loops, something magical happened. Lightning flashed across the sky in purple and gold ribbons, turning the dark pond into a mirror of starlight.
But this wasn't ordinary lightning. Each bolt made the water glow, and tiny ripples turned into sparkles that floated up into the air like magical confetti.
"Look!" cried Goldie. "The lightning is dancing! Come swim with me, Barnaby! The water is full of magic tonight!"
Barnaby's heart pounded. He wanted to be brave. He wanted to dance with the lightning too.
Slowly, carefully, he put one giant paw in the water. Then another. The water DID feel like a cool hug—soft and gentle around his fur.
"You're doing it!" cheered Goldie, swimming circles around him.
Barnaby took a deep breath and let himself float. For the first time in his life, he was swimming! And it wasn't scary at all. It was wonderful. When lightning flashed, he could see Goldie's scales twinkling like tiny stars.
They swam together all night, a giant bear and a tiny goldfish, dancing in the magical light of the storm.
The next morning, Barnaby didn't just sit on the bank anymore. He splashed and played with all the other bears, and sometimes, when Goldie was watching, he would do a special twirl just for her.
Barnaby learned that sometimes the scariest things lead to the most magical adventures—and that true friends, no matter how different, can help you find your courage.
