The Bear Who Danced With Lightning
Emma clutched her stuffed bear, Mr. Cuddles, as thunder rumbled outside her window. The old house creaked in the storm.
"Don't be scared," she whispered to her bear. "Lightning is just the sky taking pictures."
Suddenly—CRACK! A bolt of lightning struck the palm tree in the backyard, turning the night bright as day. Emma gasped and pressed her nose to the glass.
Something was moving under the palm tree.
She tiptoed downstairs and opened the back door. There, shuffling in the rain, was a lumpy figure with moss growing on its shoulders. It moved stiffly, arms outstretched.
A zombie!
Emma almost ran inside. But then she noticed something strange—the zombie wasn't scary at all. It was dancing.
The mossy figure swayed and twirled in the rain, reaching its leaf-covered hands toward the sky as another lightning bolt flashed.
"You're beautiful," Emma whispered.
The zombie stopped and looked at her with gentle, twinkling eyes.
"I am not a zombie," it said in a voice like rustling leaves. "I am the Guardian of the Garden. I sleep for many years until lightning wakes me."
Mr. Cuddles seemed to wiggle in Emma's arms. The Guardian smiled.
"Ah, a friend," it said. "Would you like to dance?"
Emma nodded, and together—girl, bear, and Guardian—they danced in the magical rain as lightning painted the sky. They spun and leaped until the storm passed and stars peeked through the clouds.
"Will I ever see you again?" Emma asked as the Guardian began to settle back under the palm tree.
"Wait for the next storm," it said. "And remember: things aren't always what they seem. Sometimes the scariest stories hide the most beautiful friends."
Emma carried Mr. Cuddles back to bed, her heart full of magic. She knew that somewhere under the palm tree, a Guardian slept, waiting for the next lightning dance.
And that was the best adventure of all.
