The Bear Who Couldn't Swim

Barnaby was a bear who loved many things. He loved honey. He loved naps in sunny patches. And he absolutely loved the color orange. His favorite orange sweater was bright and fuzzy, and he wore it every single day.

But there was one thing Barnaby didn't love. He didn't like water. Not one bit.

While other bears splashed and played in the river, Barnaby stayed on the grassy bank, watching sadly. He wished he could join them, but the water looked too deep, too scary, too wet.

One afternoon, Barnaby sat by the pond wearing his lucky orange sweater. A tiny movement caught his eye. In the shallow water near the edge, something bright was darting back and forth.

A goldfish! But this was no ordinary goldfish. Its scales shimmered like tiny orange stars, and it had the most magnificent tail Barnaby had ever seen.

"Hello there!" called Barnaby.

The goldfish popped its head above water. "Hello! I'm Finn. I'm supposed to be swimming to the other side of the pond for the fish festival, but I'm stuck. My friends swam ahead hours ago."

Barnaby's heart sank. "I wish I could help, but... I can't swim."

Finn's eyes widened. "A bear who can't swim? That's like a bird who can't fly!"

Barnaby hung his head. "I know. I'm afraid."

"Barnaby," said Finn gently, "courage doesn't mean you're not afraid. It means doing something even though you ARE afraid. And I bet with your big, strong paws, you'd be wonderful at swimming!"

Barnaby looked at his paws. Then he looked at Finn, who was counting on him. Taking a deep breath, he stepped into the cool water. One step. Two steps. Then something wonderful happened — he began to float!

"Kick your paws!" cheered Finn.

Barnaby kicked, and suddenly he was swimming! Gliding through the water felt like flying. He felt powerful and free, like anything was possible.

Finn swam beside him, his orange scales flashing in the sunlight. Together they crossed the pond, making friends with every fish along the way.

When they reached the other side, all the fish cheered. Finn thanked Barnaby with the biggest hug a fish can give.

"You did it!" said Finn. "And you know what? You're the bravest bear I've ever met."

Barnaby smiled, water dripping from his orange sweater. He had learned something wonderful that day — sometimes the best adventures start when you're afraid, but you try anyway. And sometimes, the best friends help you find courage you didn't know you had.

From then on, Barnaby was the bear who COULD swim — and he and Finn had many more adventures together in the sparkling orange light of sunset.
