The Bear Who Couldn't Swim
Tommy loved baseball more than anything. Every summer afternoon, he'd grab his favorite glove and run to the park, where his friends waited for their daily game. But this year, something strange happened.
One hot afternoon, while Tommy was chasing a fly ball toward the forest edge, he spotted something huge and furry behind the old oak tree. A bear! But not a scary bear – this bear wore a tiny baseball cap and held a mitt made of woven branches.
"I've been spying on your games for weeks," the bear rumbled softly. "My name is Barnaby, and I love baseball!"
Tommy couldn't believe it. A bear who loved baseball? Barnaby waddled onto the field, and soon all the children were gathered around him. He showed them how to hit the ball harder, throw faster, and catch even the trickiest flies. Baseball had never been so fun!
But Barnaby had a secret. When anyone suggested going to the creek for swimming, he'd shake his big head and disappear into the woods.
One particularly hot day, Tommy followed Barnaby and found him sitting sadly by the water's edge. "What's wrong?" Tommy asked.
Barnaby hung his head. "All the other bears can swim. They splash and dive and have fun in the water. But I'm too afraid. What if I sink?"
Tommy smiled. "I'll teach you! I used to be scared too."
Every day that week, Tommy and his friends helped Barnaby. First they just splashed their paws in the shallow end. Then they practiced blowing bubbles. Finally, with all the children cheering, Barnaby took a deep breath and paddled out into the cool water.
"I'm doing it!" Barnaby shouted, creating a giant splash. "I'm swimming!"
The bear who couldn't swim became the best swimming teacher in town. He showed the cubs from the forest how to float, and the children how to dive like bears. And every afternoon, you could find them all – children and bears together – playing baseball on land and swimming in the water, because friends help friends be brave, even when they're scared.
