The Bear Who Couldn't Swim

waterbearrunning

The camp newsletter called it "Building Character" but Maya called it social suicide. The Polar Bear Plunge — jumping into the freezing lake at 6 AM because apparently suffering together creates friendship or whatever.

"You're not gonna wimp out, right?" Chloe stood there with her squad, all matching tie-dye shirts and sunscreen that smelled like coconut privilege. "Everyone's doing it."

Maya's fingers tightened around the stuffed bear keychain on her backpack — a gross childish thing she'd forgotten to remove, and now it was too late. "Uh, yeah. Totally."

Her roommate Kai rolled their eyes so hard it looked painful. "Don't let them pressure you, Maya. Actual bears have more dignity."

That night, Maya lay in bed listening to frogs scream at each other across the **water**. Her dad had given her the bear keychain when she was seven, after her mom left. Don't **bear** the weight of the world alone, he'd said, all awkward and soft in a way dads sometimes are. She'd kept it through six schools, three neighborhoods, and now this — this Camp-Together-We-Thrive nightmare where everyone seemed to know exactly who they were supposed to be.

Chloe's voice carried through the cabin walls. "...Maya's probably gonna chicken out. She seems like the type."

Something snapped inside Maya's chest.

She was **running** before she made the decision. Out the cabin door, past the mess hall, toward the lake where the moonlight slicked everything silver. She'd show them. She'd jump in that water and she'd survive and they'd have to find something else to talk about.

But when she got to the dock, someone was already there.

Kai sat at the edge, feet dangling in the **water**, fully clothed. They turned at the sound of Maya's sneakers skidding on the wood.

"Oh," Maya said, breathless. "I was just..."

"Running away from Chloe's blackmail attempt?" Kai's voice was gentle. "I was **running** too. This morning. From the bear."

"The what?"

"The camp mascot. It's this creepy dude in a **bear** costume who's supposed to hype everyone up for the plunge." Kai shuddered. "It winked at me and I literally jogged to the next zip code."

Maya started laughing and couldn't stop. Kai joined in, and suddenly the lake didn't look so terrifying anymore.

"We could just not do it," Kai said. "Like, what if character is built by NOT doing humiliating things for clout?"

Maya looked at the **water**, then at Kai, then back at the cabins. "Yeah. Let's build character by eating all the breakfast pancakes before anyone else wakes up."

"Revolutionary." Kai stood up, wringing out their socks. "Hey, is that a bear on your keychain?"

Maya unclipped it from her backpack, feeling lighter somehow. "Yeah. My dad gave it to me. It's kinda lame but..."

"It's iconic," Kai said. "10/10, no notes."

The sun was coming up over the **water**, painting everything pink and gold. Somewhere in the distance, the camp mascot in their **bear** costume was probably terrorizing some other poor soul. Maya and Kai walked back toward the cabins, not **running** from anything anymore.

"Chloe's gonna be so mad we bailed," Maya said.

"Let her," Kai replied. "Some stories are better left unwritten."
