The Bear Who Couldn't Complement

Barnaby was a bear with very messy hair. It stuck up in every direction, like grass after a windstorm. The other bears in Pine Forest laughed at him. "Look at Barnaby's hair!" they'd giggle. Barnaby spent hours trying to smooth it down with pine sap and river mud. Nothing worked.

One sunny afternoon, something came bouncing through the forest. It was round and bright orange—a baseball! Barnaby had never seen one before. He picked it up with his big fuzzy paws. Just then, a girl burst through the bushes. "There it is!" she cried.

Barnaby froze. This must be a human! Humans were scary.

But the girl didn't run. She smiled. "I'm Lily. That's my baseball." She looked at Barnaby's wild hair and didn't laugh. Instead, she said, "Your hair looks like sunshine! That's so cool."

Barnaby's eyes grew wide. No one had ever said anything nice about his hair before. "You... you think so?"

"I know so!" Lily pulled an orange from her pocket. "Want to play catch? I'll teach you!"

They played until sunset. Barnaby discovered he was good at baseball! He could throw the ball farther than any bear, and catch it in his mouth like a pro. Lily cheered every time.

"You're my best friend, Barnaby," she said as the sun began to set. "And do you know what I learned today?"

Barnaby shook his messy head.

"Being different is what makes you special. Your hair isn't messy—it's extraordinary!"

Barnaby smiled the biggest bear smile. For the first time in his life, he didn't want to change his hair at all. It was perfect just the way it was.

Every day after school, Lily came back. They played baseball until the orange sun dipped below the trees. The other bears stopped laughing when they saw how amazing Barnaby was at the game. Soon, they wanted to play too.

Barnaby learned that the right friend can help you see yourself differently. And sometimes, the very thing you want to change about yourself is exactly what makes you wonderful.
