The Bear Who Collected Stars
Barnaby was a small bear with very big dreams. While other bears slept through winter, Barnaby stayed awake, watching stars dance across the sky like diamond dust. He wished, more than anything, to catch one.
One starry night, a clever fox named Fern appeared at the mouth of his cave. Her fur shimmered silver in the moonlight. "I know where stars go when they fall," she whispered. "Will you come with me?"
Barnaby's heart leaped. Together they padded through the enchanted forest, past trees that hummed lullabies and flowers that glowed softly in the dark. Fern's tail bobbed like a lantern ahead of him.
They reached a hidden clearing where a pool of water lay still as glass. But this was no ordinary water—it sparkled with an inner light, and tiny stars floated just beneath its surface.
"This is the Star Pool," Fern explained. "Every fallen star comes here to rest."
But something was wrong. The pool was shrinking. The magical water was disappearing, and the stars were fading. A great, golden bull lay nearby, his massive head bowed. His eyes were sad.
"The bull is Orion's guardian," Fern said softly. "He's been guarding this pool for a thousand years, but he's growing old. Without him, the Star Pool will dry up, and no more stars will be reborn."
Barnaby approached the bull carefully. The great creature raised his head, and Barnaby saw tears in his gentle eyes.
"I am too tired to continue," the bull rumbled like distant thunder. "I need someone to take my place."
Barnaby looked at his small paws, then at the fading stars. He wasn't strong or magical. But he had something else—a heart full of wonder and dreams that stretched bigger than the sky.
"I'll help," Barnaby said. "Not by taking your place, but by sharing the load."
He called to Fern, and together they stood beside the ancient bull. Barnaby reached into the water and lifted a glowing star in his paws. It warmed him like a hug. Fern dipped her tail into the pool, and it blazed with light. The bull's eyes brightened.
That night, something magical happened. The bull grew younger as their kindness flowed into him. The water rose, sparkling and renewed. And the stars—they blazed brighter than ever before.
Barnaby never did catch a star for himself. But every night, when he looked up at the sky, he knew he was part of something much bigger. And that, he decided, was the greatest dream of all.
