The Bear Who Collected Lightning

waterbearlightningpyramidfriend

Barnaby was no ordinary bear. While other bears slept through winter dreams, Barnaby spent his nights catching pieces of lightning in glass jars. He had twelve jars filled with crackling blue light, glowing like captured stars on his cave shelf.

One evening, a terrible storm shook the forest. Rain pelted like tiny drums, and wind howled through the trees. Barnaby watched from his cave entrance when he saw something magical—a pyramid of pure light floating above the lake, formed by lightning striking the same spot again and again.

But the light pyramid was sinking. The water was rising, and soon it would disappear forever.

"I must save it!" Barnaby declared. But Barnaby was afraid of water. He'd never learned to swim.

Just then, a small voice called out. "I can help!"

It was Lila, a firefly who lived in the hollow of an old oak tree. She was Barnaby's neighbor, though they'd never spoken much before.

"You?" Barnaby blinked. "But you're so small!"

"Size doesn't matter when you have friends," Lila said, her glow brightening. "My whole family can help. We'll light the way!"

Soon, hundreds of fireflies swarmed around Barnaby, creating a path of golden light across the dark water. Their warm glow gave him courage. With each careful step onto floating logs, with Lila guiding him, Barnaby moved closer to the sinking pyramid.

The water was cold, and Barnaby trembled. But he thought of Lila and all her firefly friends counting on him. He couldn't give up.

At last, he reached the pyramid of light just as it began to dissolve. With a deep breath, Barnaby captured it in his thirteenth glass jar. It was beautiful—lightning frozen in time, shaped like a miniature pyramid, glowing with every color of the rainbow.

"We did it!" Lila cheered, dancing around him.

Barnaby placed the jar on his cave shelf, the most precious of all his treasures. But that night, he realized something important. The pyramid of light was magnificent, yes. But what really made his heart glow was the friend who had believed in him when he was afraid.

From then on, Barnaby still collected lightning. But he spent his days by the water, learning to swim with Lila and her firefly family. Because some treasures, he discovered, are far more magical than anything you can keep in a jar.
