The Bear Who Chased Lightning
Barnaby was a small orange bear with very big dreams. While other bears slept through the winter, Barnaby stayed awake, watching the sky through his cozy cave. He loved storms—the way the clouds rolled like ocean waves and the air smelled of rain and magic.
One evening, as storm clouds gathered, Barnaby saw something extraordinary. A flash of lightning didn't just fade away like usual. It danced! It zigzagged and sparkled, then zipped right into the pond near his cave.
Curious, Barnaby crept to the water's edge. There, swimming happily among the lily pads, was a tiny goldfish glowing with the same shimmering light as the lightning bolt.
"Hello!" said Barnaby, his nose twitching with excitement. "Did you just fall from the sky?"
The goldfish swam closer, her scales flickering like miniature stars. "I'm Flash!" she bubbled. "I'm a lightning fish! I was exploring the clouds when I slipped and fell. Now I can't get back home!"
Barnaby's heart squeezed. He knew what it felt like to be far from home. "I'll help you return!" he promised without hesitation.
But how could a bear reach the clouds? Barnaby scratched his fuzzy head. Then he had an idea—a wonderfully silly, perfect idea.
The next stormy night, Barnaby stood on the highest hill. When lightning flashed across the sky, he raised his paws and called, "Flash! Give me some of your magic!"
The little goldfish swam in circles, sending sparkles dancing toward Barnaby. His orange fur began to glow brighter than a sunset. He felt light as a dandelion seed.
"Now!" cried Flash. "Jump!"
Barnaby leaped straight toward the lightning bolt—and kept going up! Higher and higher, past birds and clouds, until he reached the place where lightning was born. Flash swam into the storm clouds, her light blending perfectly with her family's.
"Thank you, Barnaby!" Flash called down, her voice like gentle thunder. "You're the best friend a lightning fish could have!"
Barnaby floated back to earth, his fur still softly glowing. Sometimes, he discovered, the smallest bears can do the biggest things—especially when they help a friend.
Now whenever storms rumble, Barnaby smiles. A little spark of lightning always flickers in his orange fur, a reminder that friendship can help you reach even the highest clouds.
