The Bear Who Caught Lightning

Emma sat by the old swimming pool in her backyard, watching storm clouds gather. Her grandmother had told her stories about magical things that happened during storms, but Emma had never believed them. Until tonight.

A massive crack of lightning split the sky. In that flash, Emma saw him—a bear standing at the edge of the pool, his fur the color of midnight sky, speckled with what looked like tiny stars.

Emma held her breath. The bear dipped one giant paw into the pool. The water began to glow, swirling with captured lightning—golds, purples, blues, dancing like captured fireflies.

"You're not afraid?" the bear spoke, his voice gentle as summer rain.

Emma shook her head. "You're beautiful."

The bear smiled. "I'm Barnaby, the Lightning Keeper. Every storm, I come here to collect the lightning's magic and store it in pools for children who need a little wonder."

Emma crept closer. "Can I see?"

Barnaby nodded. Emma sat beside him and peered into the water. She saw reflected dreams—children flying, dragons dancing, forests made of candy. The lightning wasn't scary at all. It was magic, waiting to be shared.

"Why pools?" Emma asked.

"Because water holds memories," Barnaby said. "And lightning holds dreams. Together, they make wishes come true."

He splashed water gently toward Emma. Tiny droplets of glowing liquid landed on her hands, then dissolved into warmth that spread through her whole body. She felt braver, stronger, full of impossible possibilities.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Barnaby's eyes twinkled like captured stars. "The magic was already yours, Emma. You just needed to look with courage instead of fear."

As the storm passed, the bear faded into mist, but the pool still glowed faintly. Emma understood then: the most magical things aren't the ones we're afraid of—they're the ones we're brave enough to truly see.

Every storm after that, Emma waited by her pool. And sometimes, just sometimes, she'd see sparks of gold in the water, reminding her that magic exists for those with the heart to find it.
